Green Energy for New York: Siemens Energy to Connect State’s First Large-Scale Offshore Wind Farm to Grid | National company

ORLANDO, Fla .– (BUSINESS WIRE) – October 27, 2021–

Siemens Energy has won its first offshore grid connection project in the United States. In consortium with Aker Solutions, the company will supply the high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system that will bring green power from Sunrise Wind, New York’s first large-scale offshore wind project, to the continent. It is the first offshore wind project in the United States to use HVDC technology. The approximately 924 megawatt wind farm is being developed by a joint venture between Danish clean energy company Ørsted and US energy supplier Eversource. Located approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Long Island, Sunrise Wind will provide green power to nearly 600,000 homes in New York State and support the state’s goal of achieving its goal of 100% clean electricity by 2040.

With more than 10,000 employees working at 84 sites across the United States, the company is driving the energy transition with a portfolio of products, solutions and services that covers almost the entire energy value chain – from production and transmission of electricity to storage which includes both conventional and renewable energies. energy technology.

“To date, we have connected the offshore grid to the continent 21 times, bringing more than 12 gigawatts of wind power to households in Europe. We are proud of the fact that we are now able to proceed with our very first offshore HVDC grid connection project in the United States, ”said Tim Holt, Siemens Energy Board Member. “Carbon neutrality goals will not be achieved without the large-scale deployment of renewable energy projects like Sunrise Wind. There will be many more wind projects like this in the United States and we are happy to do our part to help provide the country with sustainable energy. “

Siemens Energy will supply the turnkey HVDC system and carry out onshore civil works in partnership with local companies. The HVDC system will enable low-loss transport of green energy generated from the wind farm to the mainland. It consists of two converter stations: The offshore converter station will collect the 66 kilovolts (kV) alternating current (AC) power generated by the wind turbines through an inter-grid cable system and transform it into 320 kV DC for a transmission over 160 kilometers. export cable to the land converter station, located at Holbrook on Long Island. The earth station will convert the electricity back to AC power to feed it into the distribution grid that will bring power to homes, industry and other end users in New York City. Aker Solutions is responsible for the platform consisting of a steel substructure and an upper deck housing the electrical equipment. Sunrise Wind will support the establishment of a sustainable offshore wind supply chain in New York State. The onshore installation of the project converter station will be carried out by local companies. Final deliveries are scheduled for the second half of 2025.
